Our Story

From breaking ground to welcoming our first guests — and everything since.

Mark Fisher purchased Shades Market with a vision for something more — a place rooted in community, connection, and quality.

What had long been a familiar stop in town became the foundation for a new idea: a neighborhood café and grocery built to serve Gratz with heart.

This was the first step toward what would become The Village Beacon.

Renovation began on the outside first.

The building’s exterior was the first sign that something new was coming to Gratz. Updates to the façade, structural improvements, and careful design decisions began reshaping the property into something warmer and more inviting.

What had once been familiar started to feel different — intentional, refreshed, and full of possibility.

The transformation of Shades Market into The Village Beacon had officially begun.

Soon after, work moved indoors.

Walls were opened. Layouts were reconsidered. Plans were refined. What had once been a familiar interior was carefully reimagined with purpose — every decision made with community and comfort in mind.

Dust and framing slowly gave way to vision and structure. The space was no longer simply being renovated — it was being rebuilt to become The Village Beacon.

While renovation continued inside, the exterior began to take on a new identity.

Updates to the façade, fresh finishes, and thoughtful design choices slowly transformed the building’s presence. What once blended into the background started to stand out — warm, welcoming, and ready to become a gathering place.

The vision for The Village Beacon was becoming visible from the road.

The Interior Comes to Life

As construction progressed, the inside of the building began to transform.

Walls were finished. Lighting was installed. The counter took shape. Warm tones, natural textures, and thoughtful details slowly replaced exposed framing and dust.

For the first time, it felt less like a renovation — and more like a place where conversations would happen, coffee would be poured, and neighbors would gather.

The Village Beacon was no longer just a vision. It was becoming real.

With construction nearing completion, the final pieces began to fall into place.

Shelving was installed. Products were selected with care. Local favorites and everyday essentials found their place throughout the store. Behind the counter, equipment was tested and preparations were underway for the first cups of coffee to be poured.

For the first time, the space didn’t feel like a project — it felt like a store ready to serve its community.

The Village Beacon was preparing to open its doors.

After months of planning, building, and preparation, The Village Beacon officially opened its doors.

Coffee was poured. Sandwiches were served. Shelves were stocked. Neighbors gathered. What began as a vision had become a welcoming space for conversation, meals, and everyday moments.

The support from the community was immediate and meaningful. From the very first day, it was clear that The Village Beacon was more than a renovation — it was a new chapter for Gratz.

We were proud to begin serving the public and grateful for the warm welcome.

Nearly a year after opening, The Village Beacon has become part of the rhythm of daily life in Gratz.

Morning coffee runs. Lunch breaks. Grocery stops. Conversations at the counter. What began as a vision has grown into a space filled with familiar faces and steady routines.

We remain committed to serving our community with quality, consistency, and care — and we’re just getting started.
